Today marks the start of a big 4 day giveaway of Brand Loyalty. (and this is the latest in a series of posts on our contemporary Dystopia) Today we're looking at invisibility. You might well ask the question:
Why would someone give a book away free? Possible answers: Because they can’t sell it. Because it’s not worth anything. Look a bit deeper into book publishing today and you’ll see that there’s more to it than that.
We live in a book world (especially in the world of digital books) where visibility is everything and visibility is controlled by how much you pay or by how ‘popular’ you are. You can be popular by paying lots of money to be visible, or you can try to become visible by giving away your book, hoping that this will result in downloads which push you up the charts, making you visible.
So you either pay the money up front for promotion or you pay by stealth by giving your book away.
Every time that I’ve put Brand Loyalty up for free it has rocketed up the charts. It hits #1 for a short time. When the free period is over it goes back down to around 8 millionth. And in that position no one can see it, so no one can know about it, so no one will buy it.
WHETHER IT IS GOOD OR NOT.
Never mind the quality feel the width is the mantra for book publishing these days. If you can afford to pay then you can ‘buy’ readers. Or at least purchasers. you can't make folk download and you certainly can't make them actually read. There's a lot of very dry mouthed horses out there in the Ultimate World.
So what is the purpose of a free book promotion?
In one word: Visibility which is really about reaching out to find people who might be interested in the book because I don’t have a marketing budget or enough ‘fame’ or personal ‘popularity’ to achieve this.
So what can you do? There’s no written contract with a free download but can I ask you to consider the following. I’m giving a book away free. It took 15 years (not full time of course) of research and planning and rejection before I finally got this book published. That was 7 years ago. I’ve sold probably about £500 worth of copies and given more than double that amount away. This is not a way to earn a living. I did it because I believe in the story and I believe it has something significant to say about our modern world. I may be deluded of course but all of the above has happened WHETHER THE BOOK IS GOOD OR NOT. I’ve given all the commitment I can to the book, it's for you to decide whether you like it or not. But you can't do that without reading it and if it's invisible you can't see it, never mind read it. I believe, especially right now, this is a book which a lot of people would like to read – it deals with contemporary issues that lots of people claim to be interested in but I repeat, unless people know it exists they can’t read it.
So. I’d ask you, if you download this book for free, to enter into a voluntary contract. Don’t just press LIKE on Facebook. Or even just a random SHARE. Put say 10 minutes into actually targetting people you think might be interested in it and share the link DIRECTLY to their timeline, telling them about it. Give a personal recommendation. If not of the ‘quality’ of the book then at least of the potential ‘interest’ of the topic. If you know anyone interested in dystopias, anyone who loves Orwell, then TELL THEM. The only way to achieve visibility for Brand Loyalty over the next 4 days is to go beyond the one click like/share culture and actually help market the book. Be part of a revolutionary marketing strategy which says – we’re not paying for visibility - we don’t want to be ‘sold’ to or told what we should read by algorithms – We stand up against Dystopias. We stand up against Ultimate. If you’ve read the book you’ll understand this. If you haven’t, download it for free, read it, and play your part in the ongoing quest to lift the cloak of invisibility.
I’ve done all I can, I’m giving it away and asking for help. It’s up to you whether you choose to help or not. I’ll let you know how we get on. As of 10am there’s no figures at all as to where it stands. They are updated hourly so I’ll check back later and let you know. You can follow on McRenegades at Facebook.
